Denise Gomes knocked out Yan Xiaonan with 11 seconds left in the first round in Shanghai on Saturday, and has run out of people to be asked about.
The 26-year-old Brazilian landed a lead elbow that dropped the former title challenger, then finished with a combination at 4:49 of the opening round of the strawweight co-main event.
It was her fifth straight win, which MMA Junkie reported as the longest active streak in the division, and it tied Jessica Andrade for the most knockouts in UFC strawweight history with four (per MMA Junkie post-event facts).
"I was definitely able to show I'm one of the best strikers," Gomes said afterward. "I showed the elbow tonight, and I have a lot of other weapons I want to show."
She was more direct about what she wants next.
"I'm putting my name up there. I think everyone's going to see I'm here to stay. I'm Denise Gomes. My name is here now, and I think all the strawweight girls are going to realize that now."
Gomes is 13-3, and 7-2 in the UFC. Yan, who fell to 19-6, had been the sternest test of her career on paper: a one-time championship challenger fighting in front of a home crowd, and the more experienced fighter by a distance.
Gomes did not fight like the underdog. She came forward from the opening bell and accepted a striking exchange, which is the fight Yan would have wanted.
The champion is Mackenzie Dern. Nothing has been announced, and the division has more than one fighter with a claim, but a five-fight streak ending in a knockout of a former title challenger is a difficult case to leave sitting.
